ABOUT OUR FOUNDER, KIMBERLY TEAL
Hi. I’m Kimberly. I’ve been a California attorney for over 35 years, and I have experience in many areas of the law including divorce, custody, support, business, real estate, personal injury, civil litigation, mediation and even a little bit of criminal defense. I recently decided to focus my practice on Estate Planning and Business Counseling out of a desire to genuinely be of service and help people in a meaningful way.
I have discovered that the traditional way of practicing estate planning just simply doesn’t work and it leaves families with failed plans that don’t work when they are needed. I don’t just draft documents and present them to my clients in a fancy binder that then sits on a shelf for years never to be updated. While, of course, I prepare all the necessary documents I also develop a heart-centered relationship with my clients, and I encourage them to call me with questions and seek my counsel through the many changes that their lives go through so I can revise and update their plans personally as their lives evolve and the law changes.
MY WHY:
My father died with just a will which meant Probate for my brother, my sister and me. He named me as executor, but the court process was costly, lengthy and expensive. It was also public. This caused conflict between my siblings and I because in his will my father said he wanted my brother and I to receive more than my sister since we had cared for him in his final days. The result was that she challenged the will and we were forced to negotiate with her or endure an even lengthier court procedure.
In addition, after his parents died, my husband paid $5000 for an estate plan with his father’s firm but the lawyer who prepared it did not follow through, he eventually retired and left no successor lawyer to assist his clients. Therefore, the trust was never funded, and the plan would have failed if anything had happened to him before I was able to update and fund it properly. I have learned from this and I already have a successor attorney who practices the same way I do, and they would step in and fully support my clients if anything were to happen to me.
Because I kept hearing these stories of people dying without an estate plan in place, I love the heart-centered and intentional approach that my firm now employs because it is a better way to truly help people take care of and guide their loved ones after their death or incapacity. It’s not just about the documents; it’s about the relationship with the lawyer. My relationship with my clients allows them to trust me with the process and I listen to them ad let them choose their plan after being educated on their options.
My hope is that Teal Legacy Law becomes the “go to” estate planning firm in my community so I can young families, more established families as well as families who need more advanced planning.
